Difference Between CPU & PSU Patch.

Hi, What is the difference between CPU patch and PSU patch. Can we apply CPU patch over psu patch?

Patch Set Updates (PSUs) are proactive cumulative patches containing recommended bug fixes that are released on a regular and predictable schedule. PSUs are on the same quarterly schedule as the Critical Patch Updates (CPU), specifically the Tuesday closest to the 17th of January, April, July, and October. Critical Patch Updates are collections of security fixes for Oracle products. They are available to customers with valid support contracts. They are released on the Tuesday closest to the 17th day of January, April, July and October. Can we apply CPU patch over psu patch? Depend. But OPATCH ultilty handle with confilct of patchset installed. Patch Conflicts All patches may not be compatible with one another. For example, if a patch has been applied, all the bugs fixed by that patch could reappear after another patch is applied. This is called a conflict situation. Read this, https://blogs.oracle.com/security/entry/the_benefits_of_database_serve Can we apply CPU patch over psu patch? From the above link only, The application of the Patch Set Update results in the introduction of a new baseline version for the Database Server with consequences in regards to how future patches will be applied on the system when a PSU has previously been installed. Once a PSU has been applied on the system, the recommended method to apply all future CPU program security content is to apply future PSUs. In other words, once a PSU has been applied, it is not recommended to switch back to traditional N-apply patches. While such a switch is possible with assistance from Oracle technical support, it is a complex procedure and therefore is not recommended. However, if previously only traditional N-apply CPU patches have been applied, customers can elect to apply the most current Patch Set Update at any time. Aman....
